Dog medical insurance is something that most people neglect to get until AFTER the event. It is only human nature to put unpleasant thoughts on the back burner of our brain. The very thought of our devoted dog companions becoming ill is so unpleasant that most of us neglect to get dog medical insurance when we should. We simply refuse to think about it until it is too late and we find ourselves in the heartbreaking position of making decisions about our beloved pet’s health care based on our finances.
Aw Heck, My Vet’s Not That Expensive!
Maybe your veterinary is not all that expensive when it comes to routine procedures like neutering, spaying, immunizations and toenail trims but what happens if your much loved dog develops a disease like cancer or her leg is shattered in an accident?
The more complex the treatment is, the more costly your bill is going to be. The last 20 years has seen a great leap in the technology related to pet medicine. While this is wonderful news for pet owners, we all know that technology comes with a price tag.
Personal Experience
My beloved dog was 10 years old when she was diagnosed with diabetes. Thankfully I was able to financially take care of her special needs. At 12 ½ she was diagnosed with bladder cancer. My vet, who had been very merciful on my finances, referred us to a team of canine cancer specialists in a nearby city where she was operated on for the cancer. I paid most of my savings for the surgery, thinking I would have her for years to come but the cancer had already spread and within a month I lost her. While I would still do it all again in a heartbeat, I sure could have used pet insurance at the time.
What Would You Do?
We never know what we would or could do until we are put in the position where we have to make a decision regarding our dog’s health or literally, their future. The best way to avoid being put in that terrible position is to get dog medical insurance before you need it and can only wish you had gotten it.
Finding Medical Insurance for Man’s Best Friend
If you already have a vet that you prefer, call their clinic and ask them which dog medical insurances they accept. Also ask them for recommendations about the companies they deal with. By asking your vet a few simple questions you can save a lot of time and energy in your insurance search. Once you have narrowed the field to what insurance your vet accepts, go online and research the policies these companies offer.
It is important to note that not all insurance policies are created equal. Look for a policy that contains all the features you desire. Keep in mind that just like medical insurance for people, there may be deductibles and per incident limits so be on the alert for those.
Also bear in mind that like insurance for people, there are major medical policies that covers surgeries and other major conditions or there are more basic policies that will only cover basic services like routine exams and perhaps medications for your dog.
