The dog barking device was designed to help control dogs that bark excessively. There are a number of different designs available today. When dogs bark too much everyone will agree that it can be very disturbing. At night they keep everyone in the neighbourhood awake and something has to be done about the noise. This is especially true if you live within the city limits where noise laws are in effect.
Dog barking devices were designed to help with this problem but there is much controversy over whether or not using such methods is a humane way of dealing with the excessive barking. The first design was the shock collar. These do work but they can also cause the dog to become nervous, unstable and some will begin to panic. No loving dog owner wants to put their pet through that.
Fortunately, new designs have become available such as the citronella collar. When the dog barks, a sensor is triggered and citronella oil is squirted into the dogs face. This oil is very unpleasant and it usually won't take the dog long to associate his barking with the stinky smell. Although, having oil squirted into your pet's face could be quite a shock for a sensitive dog.
The ultrasonic collar seems to be the less invasive type of dog barking device. When your dog barks, it generates a very unpleasant sound that only your pet can hear. When he realizes his barking is causing the unpleasant sound he usually quietens down. However, if you have several pets in your home, all of them can hear this sound even though only one of them may be doing all of the barking.
If you choose to use a dog barking device, try to remember dogs bark to communicate. It's their way of telling us when they're hungry, lonely and when someone or something is invading their territory. Granted, sometimes they may get a little carried away and bark too much making it necessary for you to take measures to get the barking under control. Nevertheless, as a pet owner, it's your responsibility to use these devices correctly and to make sure your pet is not being harmed in the process.
