One of the first things that you’ll do after picking out your Goldendoodle puppy will be to give him a name. The next thing that you need to do is teach him what his name is and that he is expected to respond to it when he hears it called out.

So how do you teach your Goldendoodle his name? There are actually a few tips that can help to make this process go much smoother. Some of them are listed below.

Tips for teaching your Goldendoodle his name:

  • Start off in quite surroundings and use a leash to provide you with complete control. Also have some treats on hand.

  • Start by calling out your dogs name and when he responds to it, praise him by giving him a treat.

  • If you’re having trouble getting your pet to respond to his name, call it out while holding the treat in front of your face. This way, he will begin to associate the name with his treat.

  • Once he begins to respond to his name when you call it out, you can swap out the treat for a toy. Call his name and when he responds, play ball for a few minutes or some other game he likes.

  • After your pet begins to respond to his name every time you call it out in a quite and relaxed environment, it’s time to move up to the next stage. This is when you begin calling out his name under normal situations where there are usually many distractions such as people talking.

  • Keep all of the training sessions short and make them fun for your puppy. Be sure and reward his good behavior. This will help him to learn faster and easier.

  • Don’t call out your puppy’s name and scold him for doing something wrong because this will eventually make him ignore his name. He will start to associate it with bad things and may not respond at all.

Once your puppy knows his name he will be more attentive when you’re talking to him. He will stop whatever he’s doing at any given time to focus on you. This is very important because you need your dog’s complete attention when you’re trying to communicate with him.

It makes it much easier to teach him commands such as sit, stay and fetch as well. Take that extra step in dog training and teach your Goldendoodle his name during your first few days together. This will make communicating with your pet much easier.
