Are you searching among non shedding dog breeds in hopes of finding one that you think you could live with? Does your sister have a dog that leaves a trail of hair everywhere it goes? Does she have to vacuum a spot on the couch for you when you wear your dark slacks to her house? Is the hair issue at your sister’s the situation you are trying to avoid? Well, searching for a non-shedding dog is the right start in the hunt for a dog that will not leave handfuls of hair everywhere it goes.

Is it just the Vacuuming you Dread or are there other Issues?

Non-shedding dogs are not only nice to have as pets from the standpoint of cleanliness but those with canine allergies are often able to live with non-shedding dogs and get along quite well.

Why do Some Dogs Shed More than Others?

Dogs that have double coats such as Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute shed profusely, especially after the colder seasons are over. Their undercoat provides natural cold weather protection and is important to these breeds in their natural environments.  Even single coat dogs can be moderate to heavy shedders. It seems that Mother Nature provided a coat appropriate for each breeds job in life; working dogs with single coats often shed fairly heavily.

Dog breeds that work chasing cows through dense brush may have a single coat but that coat will have copious amounts of hair to protect the body. They shed hair continually and in large amounts commonly.  In general, the more human like the hair of a long coated dog, the less it will shed. Also, the curlier the hair (such as Poodles) the less a breed will shed.

There is No Such Thing as Dog Breeds that DO NOT Shed

There are no dog breeds that do not shed; every breed will shed even if very little. The appropriate terminology that describes non-shedding dogs is low-shedding dogs.

What about Hairless Dog Breeds?

So called hairless dogs commonly have hair between the pads of their feet on generally on their head or ears. They not only shed a little hair but they do shed small amounts of dander.
